Cher announces the sad news her mother, Georgia Holt, has passed away

Cher is mourning the loss of her mother, Georgia Holt, after suffering from recurring health issues for several months.

She was 96.

The legendary singer announced the sad news in a brief tweet that prompted many of her four million Twitter followers to send their condolences.

"Mom is gone," the 'Believe' hitmaker penned, followed by a sad face emoji.

The 76-year-old previously revealed in early September that Holt had been hospitalised with pneumonia.

"Sorry I've Been Mia. Mom's Been Sick Off & On. She Just Got Out Of Hosp. She Had Pneumonia," Cher wrote.

A cause of death has not yet been revealed.

Holt married and divorced six times, including remarrying her first husband, John Sarkisian, 19 years after they divorced. They went on to split again.

Holt and Sarkisian had Cher in 1946. Holt had a second daughter, actress Georganne LaPiere, with her husband John Southnall.
