This year marks the 40th anniversary of The King's death.

And Elvis Presley's ex-wife Priscilla Presley has opened up about how she still misses the rock and roll star, who she was married to for six years.

Despite divorcing in 1973, the pair remained good friends until his death four years later, and the 71-year-old told News Corp she misses his child-like enthusiasm for life.

She said: 'I miss his laughter. His laughter was so contagious. He'd start and everyone would start - they didn't know what they were laughing about, they just got so much enjoyment from being with him.'

Priscilla first met Elvis when she was just 14 years old and their romance blossomed - despite an 11-year age gap - leading to her moving into his luxury Memphis mansion, Graceland, four years later in 1963.

The couple were married in Las Vegas in March 1967 and welcomed their first and only child together, Lisa Marie, nine months later.

Priscilla, who starred in The Naked Gun among other films, admitted she was never 'comfortable' with the profile that came with being associated with the singer and that she felt devoid of her own identity after spending a large part of her youth in the confines of Graceland.

She said: 'I couldn’t comment on things, because outside of my life with Elvis I didn’t really know anything. I had to start editing what I was saying, I had to start being careful with what I said, because I didn’t want to betray Elvis in any way.'

After Elvis's death, Priscilla founded Elvis Presley Enterprises in order to turn Graceland into a tourist attraction - with an initial plan to do five years' worth of tours.

But having just welcomed their 20 millionth visitor and completed a $140 million expansion, including a new 450 room hotel, the entertainer's legacy is alive and kicking at his old estate.

And while new generations of fans are fascinated by Elvis, Priscilla reckons the man himself would turn his back on one aspect of being a pop star in today's world.

She said: 'He was a very private person. I definitely can't see him on social media. We've joked about this before with some of the inner-circle, saying that "Elvis would never be on Facebook!"'
