Just a few years ago, Joni Mitchell couldn't walk or talk following a brain aneurysm that damaged her motor skills.
But this week, much to the delight of her fans, the 79-year-old played her first headline show in more than 20 years.
Playing for nearly three hours and accompanied by famous admirers like Annie Lennox, Marcus Mumford and Brandi Carlile, Joni blew everyone away with her performance.
Joni sat in the centre of the stage, wearing a pink floral silk shirt, her hair in pigtail braids under a purple beret, and carrying a cane adorned with a small bear's head.
Fans absolutely loved her performance, with many taking to Twitter to share their love and appreciation for her.
"had the most amazing time seeing joni mitchell yesterday it’s seriously a moment i will never ever ever forget. i feel so lucky to have been in the presence of such an imposing enigmatic force" one fan tweeted, attaching four videos of the show.
"Mitchell fans know that her voice has changed - has lowered and gotten grainier - since the high-and-pure days of Blue, but it's a gift to hear how much (more) emotional wisdom her singing has accrued as she nears 80," said Mikael Wood in the LA Times.
Last July, Joni stunned the world when she made a surprise appearance at the Newport Folk Festival, her first public performance since her near-fatal brain aneurysm.
That 13-song set at Newport had been called a “Joni Jam,” organized by singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile and meant to replicate the loose, wine-fueled sessions that Joni had hosted for other musicians in her California living room in recent years.
