Lionel Richie's 'The Greatest Night in Pop' documentary has been nominated for three Emmy Awards

Thirty-nine years ago 45 of the biggest names in music came together at a Los Angeles studio to record the charity single We Are The World.

Almost 40 years later, a Netflix documentary showing how the historic gathering came together has been nominated for three Emmy Awards.

It is nominated for Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special, which means Lionel Richie is up for an award as the producer. It is also up for Outstanding Directing for a Documentary/Nonfiction Program and and Outstanding Sound Editing for a Nonfiction or Reality Program.

Lionel took to social media to express his appreciation and amazement for the nominations, writing "I am still amazed by what we accomplished in 1985 and I’m even more amazed after receiving an Emmy nomination for The Greatest Night In Pop. It has been an absolute joy to be able to bring this moment in history to life alongside Netflix.

A big thank you and congratulations to all of the artists and participants for making We Are The World happen, and thank you to the Television Academy for recognizing our documentary."

Billy Joel also has a chance to win an Emmy after his CBS special Billy Joel: The 100th - Live at Madison Square Garden was nominated for Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-recorded).

His special will be up against the CBS special Dick Van Dyke: 98 Years of Magic and comedy specials from Dave Chapelle, Trevor Noah and Nikki Glaser.
