Just one week after Madonna announced her Celebration Greatest Hits world tour, featuring 35 shows that begin in Vancouver and end in Amsterdam, the Queen Of Pop's biopic has been scrapped.
According to a source, the film – which was set to star Ozark's Julia Garner and be directed by the singer herself – has been put on hold indefinitely.
The source told Variety that the 64-year-old superstar "remains committed" to making a film about her life one day, but the film is now no longer in development at Universal Pictures.
Madonna - who previously directed Filth and Wisdom in 2008 and W.E. in 2011 - previously explained that she wanted to make her biopic herself because she didn't want "misogynistic men" trying to tell her story.
She said last year: "I’ve had an extraordinary life, I must make an extraordinary film.
"It was also a preemptive strike because a lot of people were trying to make movies about me. Mostly misogynistic men. So I put my foot in the door and said, 'No one’s going to tell my story, but me.'"
The project was first announced in 2020, with the 'Vogue' hitmaker working on two script drafts with both Diablo Cody and Erin Cressida Wilson. Cody departed the project in 2021.
