Prince William and Princess Kate make an appearance on Mike Tindall’s rugby podcast

The Prince and Princess of Wales have dipped their toes into the world of podcasting, making a surprise appearance on Mike Tindall’s podcast The Good, The Bad & The Rugby alongside Princess Anne.

During a 50-minute conversation at Windsor Castle with Mike, a former rugby player who married William’s cousin, Zara Phillips, they chatted about the state of rugby today and shared some of their sports memories. 

When asked about the rumours of competitiveness between Kate and William, Kate replied - with clear sarcasm in her voice - “I don’t know where this has come from”, before going on to confess, “I don’t think we’ve actually been able to finish a game of tennis. It becomes a mental challenge between the two of us.”

William echoed that, adding that it comes down to "who can out-mental each other"

When Mike asked if any of their competitiveness had passed down to their children — Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5 — Princess Anne said  “Just a little bit, I would suggest.”

“What I think is really interesting is that they are all obviously very different temperaments,” Kate said, adding that “they are growing and trying out different sports.”

“They're obviously still really young,” she continued. “It's going to be interesting to see how that grows and develops.”

The pair also talked about parent's races, which Kate said that lots of schools have banned "because it has become far too competitive." as well as revealing that both she and William have competed in one.

"We were told categorically there was no parents' race. But then they called a last-minute parents' race, and me with the competitive side, both of us were like … we have to take part. So I had to do it in bare feet."

William shared that he came second in his race, "I started off just running, joining in and looked round. I was quite far out in front and there was an Italian dad in front and I thought I've got to catch him."

Sitting next to Zara's mother, Princess Anne, William recalled the sweet moment his cousin won gold in horseriding: “I think it was the European championship.

“I was down in Exmore at the time, camping. We were all huddling around the phone, watching it. [Zara] was there, she was blubbing away, the flag was going up. I was in pieces. I was so proud.”

Kate shared that she remembers the moment when he husband was so moved: “... you came back and said I’ve never been so proud of anyone”.

The Prince and Princess of Wales are patrons of the Welsh Rugby Union and the Rugby Football Union respectively.
