With numerous hits, awards and accolades to his name, Brian May will soon go from a member of Queen to an actual knight.

The legendary guitarist has been given the title of "Sir" as he received a knighthood as part of King Charles' first New Year Honours list.

May, also an animal welfare advocate with a PhD in astrophysics, was named a C.B.E., or Knights Bachelor, "for services to Music and to Charity," according to the official list.

The rocker's wife of 22 years, Anita Dobson, may also use the title of Lady May.

Taking to Instagram following the announcement, May thanked his fans for their love and support.

"Thank you so much for all your messages of congratulations following the announcement of my knighthood," May said in a video. "I'm very thrilled and very touched by the love that's come from you, and the support. I will do my very best to be worthy."

Signing off with a happy salute, May concluded: "For now, goodnight and thank you and much love from Sir Bri."

The musician was among 1,100 honorees included in this year's list, which recognises the achievements and service of people across the UK from all walks of life from the arts, sciences, television and film, fashion, philanthropic endeavours and beyond.

In 2019, Queen drummer Roger Taylor was awarded an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) honour.

Queen bassist John Deacon, who left the band in 1997, never received a similar honour, nor did late singer Freddie Mercury prior to his death in 1991.

In addition to his newly minted knighthood, May — who performed at the late Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee concert last year — previously received the title of Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 2005.
