It's just one of those classics Matilda, a story of strength, friendship and love, although the movie also hid some pain.
During the filming of the movie, Mara Wilson (who played Matilda), had a rough time after finding out her mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was only 8-years-old when her life changed. According to sources, her father then took on the family duties and her co-stars Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman became like parents to her.
Wilson explains:
“It was very hard… and they were so nice.
“While my mom was sick and in the hospital, they would invite me over and take care of me and get my mind off things.
“I felt very familial.
“Danny and Rhea were like my favourite aunt and uncle.”
Sadly, just over a year later her mother passed away, however, DeVito did the most respectful thing that is truly heartwarming:
"I was worried she wouldn't get to see the film. I didn't know this until later, but Danny DeVito took it unfinished to the hospital and showed it to her.
"She loved it. My mother always loved the book as well and used to read it to the children at my brother's school, so it was a real family affair," she said.
"My heart was warmed as she was involved until the very end.”
Beautiful gesture from DeVito!
