3/12 After Mary Poppins, David Tomlinson went on to appear in more Disney movies, including 'The Love Bug' and 'Bedknobs & Broomsticks'. He became notorious in his local town for flying very low in his Tiger Moth plane - crashing it once. Tomlinson retired after his last film role in 'The Fiendish Plot of Dr Fu Manchu'. He died in his sleep in 2000 after a series of strokes.

5/12 Husky-voiced Glynis continued to act after 'Mary Poppins', however, her last film appearance was in 1999 with her role as "Grandma" in the Molly Shannon romantic comedy, 'Superstar.' At that point, she had been acting for 61 years and had just turned 76 three days before the movie's premiere. Strangely enough, she also appears on the cover of Led Zeppelin's 'Led Zeppelin II' album. She is now 98 years old.

7/12 'Mary Poppins' was Julie Andrews first major film role, after enormous success on Broadway. After winning the Oscar for Best Actress for her role as the magical nanny, she went on to star in 'The Sound of Music' and 'Victor Victoria'. In 1998, a botched throat surgery irrevocably damaged her singing career, but she can be recently heard in 'Shrek' and 'Despicable Me'. In 2017, Andrews launched the Netflix children’s program 'Julie’s Room' and more recently has lent her voiceover talents to 2018’s 'Aquaman' and 'Bridgerton'.

9/12 Van Dyke's role as Bert ranks alongside Caractacus Potts in 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' as one of his most famous film roles. Still working, he is most recently recognised in the 'Night at the Museum' trilogy and appeared in 'Mary Poppins Returns' as Mr Dawes Jr., having played Mr Dawes Sr. in the original production as well. Van Dyke is a recipient of numerous awards in the entertainment industry, including five Emmys, a Grammy, and the Screen Actors Guild's highest honour, the SAG Life Achievement Award.

10/12 Karen Dotrice as Jane Banks

11/12 Karen, who came from a whole family of thespians, gave up acting in the late '70s and now has three children. Her husband is currently President of Programming for Playboy Entertainment. Dotrice was named a “Disney Legend” in 2004 but said she'd never have done Poppins or any of her other films if she had it to do over again. However, she did make a brief appearance in 'Mary Poppins Returns' as the "Elegant Woman."

12/12 Matthew Garber as Michael Banks. For many years, the fate of Garber was unknown by many, including Disney itself. He dropped out of acting after 1967 and disappeared. Ten years after his retirement, Garber contracted hepatitis which later spread to his pancreas. He died of pancreatitis at the age of 21.

It's been 50 years since the release of Walt Disney's spectacular musical Mary Poppins. Based on the book by PL Travers, and starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, the film was a worldwide phenomena.
For all its magic, and revolutionary use of cartoon animation mixed with live action actors, the film owes a lot to its stars. So fifty years on, we decided to find out where the cast has ended up...
