I was devastated to learn that my darling friend Helena McAlpine lost her long and brave fight with breast cancer yesterday afternoon. Helena was just 37 years of age. Although there was only ever going to be one outcome once the cancer had spread to her organs, Helena's energy was so incredible that although we talked about her death, we never really believed that day would ever come. She leaves behind her beloved mini-me daughter and her devoted husband - only Helena would meet the man of her dreams when she'd already been delivered a terminal prognosis, and turn those years into the happiest of her life.
Helena: you were mad, bad and dangerous to know. A funny, infuriating, loveable, creative, brave, witty superwoman. I loved you from the moment you ricocheted into my life. Being your boss was - challenging; being your friend, a pleasure and a privilege. I love you. Shine on, you crazy diamond.
In Helena's memory, and presented by her, here's a love song by New Zealand artists for all Kiwi women to hear. Reminding our women that they are precious and irreplaceable, and making sure each one has the information needed to stay healthy.
