The 1977 song is often considered the Eagles' most iconic song. It has sold over 16 million copies in the U.S. alone, charted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 19 weeks, peaking at No. 1 and in 1978, it won a Grammy award for Record of the Year.

In NZ it only reached number 5 but has sold more than 240,000 copies, 8 times platinum and is one of NZ’s biggest singles ever.
 
The lyrics have been given various interpretations by fans and critics, with the Eagles themselves describing it as their "interpretation of the high life in Los Angeles".

In 2013, Don Henley said that the song was about "a journey from innocence to experience... that's all..."
