"Whooah, we're half way there, livin’ on a prayer…"
Bon Jovi’s 1986 album, Slippery When Wet, remains their best-seller - topping Billboard’s 200 chart for eight weeks and gaining a rare Diamond certification.
The rock anthem tells the story of Tommy and Gina, a working class couple who struggle to make ends meet and vow to "hold on to what we've got."
Livin' on a Prayer is the band's signature song, topping fan-voted lists and re-charting around the world decades after its release, however it wasn’t initially favoured by the band.
“I remember walking out of the room with Richie and I said, ‘Eh, it’s okay. Maybe we should just put it on a movie soundtrack,’” Bon Jovi told The Irish Times. “Richie looked at me and said, ‘You’re an idiot. It’s really good.’ I said, ‘I just don’t know where it’s going.’
A NZ number one in 1987 and the 17th biggest selling single that year.
