"Sing us a song, you're the piano man…"

Piano Man is Billy Joel’s first single, released November 2, 1973.

Billy, originally a boxer, changed his occupation to singer after breaking his hand.

His signature song is a fictionalised retelling of his own experience as a piano-lounge singer for six months a few years earlier at the Executive Room bar in the Wilshire district of Los Angeles.

In 2013, the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and in 2015, the Library of Congress selected it for preservation in the National Recording Registry for its "cultural, historic, or artistic significance". The song was Billy’s first NZ hit reaching number 14 in December 1974.
