If you had been at 21 Greenpoint - a restaurant in Brooklyn - last Friday night, you probably would have recognised the bartender.
Bill Murray was working a shift behind the bar that night, mixing cocktails and slinging shots to celebrate the reopening of the restaurant, which is co-owned by his son, Homer Murray.
The star of Ghostbusters and Lost In Translation is fond of doing unexpected things in the most unexpected places. So in honour of Murray’s 66th birthday today, here are some of the most delightfully random things Murray has ever done to surprise ordinary people...
1. He did karaoke with complete strangers
A group of friends were at a karaoke bar in New York City when they saw Bill Murray walk in. One guy asked Murray to join them in their private karaoke room, but never expected the actor to actually take him up on the offer. Fifteen minutes later, there was a knock at the door. Bill Murray and his friends walked in and they ended up doing karaoke together for the rest of the night.
2. He showed up at a random house party and did all the dishes
In this stranger-than-fiction story, 22-year-old Norwegian woman Lykke Stavnef ran into Murray at a bar in St Andrews, Scotland. She invited him to a house party she was going to later that night, and to her surprise, he accepted. Murray spent the whole evening having fun at the party—which quickly filled up with students eager to meet the actor—and before he left, he did all the dishes in the kitchen sink.
3. He crashed a bachelor party (see the video above)
In 2014, some guys celebrating a bachelor party spotted Bill Murray at a steakhouse in Charleston, South Carolina. They asked him to come over and give a few words of advice to the groom, and he proceeded to deliver an amazing toast, which they captured on video: “Now listen here, I’m going to give you all a piece of advice because it’s too late for this guy,” Murray told the single men in the room. “Here’s what I recommend to you. If you have someone that you think is the one … take that person and travel around the world. Buy a plane ticket for the two of you to travel all around the world and go to places that are hard to go to and hard to get out of. And if when you come back to JFK and you’re still in love with that person, get married at the airport.”
4. He photo-bombed an engagement picture
Just a few weeks after delivering the toast at the bachelor party in Charleston, Murray surprised another Charleston couple when he photo-bombed their engagement photo shoot.
5. He crashed a kickball game
A group of adult kickball players in New York City got a huge surprise when Murray randomly showed up on the field one Sunday and asked to join in. He “popped up out of nowhere” and “was bouncing the ball… ran over to second base,” according to an account one of the players gave. “Gave us all high fives and let us pose with him in the picture.”
We've notice one important theme emerging: if you ever see Bill Murray in public, you should definitely ask him to hang out with you!
