WATCH: Jeremy Wells' heartwarming birthday tribute to Hilary Barry brings tears to her eyes

Last Wednesday marked Hilary Barry's 50th birthday!

And as the much-loved Seven Sharp presenter graced our screens on the famous red couch that night, Jeremy Wells paid a special tribute to Hilary.

Usually known for his great quips and quick wit, Jeremy almost brought Hilary to tears with his heartwarming words.

"Hilary didn't want us to do anything and make a fuss but from our team thank you so much for what you do, you're a wonderful colleague and a wonderful leader of our team and a great broadcaster," Jeremy began.

"But, I think what people at home don't see is probably your greatest achievement, which is what an amazing mum you are."

Hilary was genuinely taken aback by his surprise tribute.

"Stop it you're going to make me cry," she said, fanning herself with some sheets of paper.

Her TVNZ colleagues Melissa Stokes, Lisa Davies, and Daniel Faitaua were also among those who wished her a happy birthday.

Last month Barry won The New Zealand Television Award for Best News and Current Affairs presenter for her coverage of the Christchurch mosque attacks.
